It's 2012 so we thought we'd reflect a little on the last year and tell you a bit about what is coming up early in 2012 for Kerry Blu.

Our biggest achievement in 2011 was winning the Award for Best Bridal Accessories at the North West Wedding Awards. We had let our customers know to vote for us by sending a link in our outgoing "despatch" email and were so chuffed that hundreds had taken the time and effort to vote. Thanks again - we appreciate all your support and are very pleased that you were happy with your purchase enough to vote us as the best in the North West!

Our beautiful vintage bridal combs continue to be our best sellers in 2011 along with our Vintage Starlet Collection featuring pearls and diamantes. The above photograph features our gorgeous Vintage Starlet Side Headband modelled by the lovely Lisa at our Summer 2011 photoshoot with Kev Malone Photography.

What is your background, tell me what inspired you to set upyour business?

I’m a solicitor (ex City now at a small commercial firm inChester) but always wanted to set up my own business from an early age. When Iwas at university I would buy books about running a business but could neverthink of anything to offer and so the desire was put on the back burner. Thenwhen I was planning my own wedding, I found it really hard to get what Iwanted, which was a classic, elegant, simple 50s style gown for a reasonableprice. For ages I kept saying to my husband that someone should be offering arange of 50s style dresses at affordable prices and he would always say, ‘whydon’t you do it then?’ but it took years of thinking, planning and plucking upcourage to actually do it.

Do you have a studio or are you internet based only?

The top floor of my house is a studio and office so bridescan come and try all the dresses, shoes, veils and hair accessories before theybuy.

What are your top tips for brides choosing a wedding dress?

Try on lots of styles and never assume that a particularstyle won’t suit you. They look very different from how they look on a hangerwhen they are on a body so try everything and make your decision based on whatyou see in the mirror.

Do you offer anything else other than dresses?

This is such a hard question, but Natalie Portman is planninga wedding I believe and would look amazing in any of the dresses!

What do you love best about the vintage style?

I love the timeless elegance of the 50s style – it has nevergone out of style. Fashions come and go, but there is something classic andenduring about the 50s shape of a full skirt and nipped-in waist.

We were lucky enough to have Kev Malone on board for our recent photoshoot. He managed to capture some beautiful images including some of our most popular bridal headbands. Kev, as well as being a great wedding photographer is also one of the nicest people we've had the pleasure to meet in the wedding industry. So here's a bit more about him.

What is yourbackground, tell me what inspired you to set up your business?

Over the past few years I’ve photographed everything frompet portraits, newborns, cycling races, live music, live theatre and a lot ofthings in between. I always said I’d never do weddings but after doing a favourfor a friend in August 2010 I was bitten by the bug and had to have more. Ispent the next 12 months shooting weddings for friends, friends of friends, andfriends of friends of friends, in order to experiment, and build experience.This proved to be a massive eye opener with every wedding being more successfulthan the last.

I now find myself completely addicted to capturing peoplesspecial day and look forward to a long and rewarding career.

How far do you travelto photograph a wedding?

I am based in Blackpool but will travel anywhere I’m needed,from Blackpool to Gretna Green to Barbados (I wish)

What sets you apartfrom other wedding photographers?

I care about the fact that your wedding day is one of themost important days of your life. As well as having the technical know-how toshoot in any situation, no-one will care more about providing high qualityprofessional images of your day.

What other servicesdo you offer besides wedding photography?

I offer lifestyle and studio portraiture and Christenings.To follow your wedding I am also happy to offer a Cherish The Dress shoot. Aperfect excuse to wear your dress one more time.

What are your toptips for brides looking to choose a wedding photographer?

Be careful. Never choose a photographer from their websitealone. Anybody can be lucky and get a few good shots. It takes hard work and akeen eye to get repeatedly professional shots throughout an entire day.

Make sure you get to know your photographer as they’ll bewith you for the entire day. Even if they get fantastic images, if you don’tget on with your photographer it could put a dampener on your day.

Define your budget and find the best photographer you canfor that price. If you go out to find the cheapest you can find it could endvery badly.

Buying a Cheap Tiara

I love a good bargain me. One of my biggest talents (other than designing wedding jewellery of course) is sniffing out something that is completely bargainous but looks a million dollars. If i’m not at home designing wedding jewellery and packing up customers’ orders you’ll probably find me in one of the local charity shops rooting through the rails of secondhand clothes and handbags and believe me, i’ll usually find something fabulous!

So... i’m all for the thrill you get when you bag a bargain, I really am but sometimes cheap isn’t always best. Cheap can look....well cheap. “You get what you pay for” is *nearly* always true...unless you are an expert bargain hunter like me;).

Picture this... this actually happened to me this weekend. I was walking back from one of my latest bargain hunting expeditions and came across a wedding party emerging from one of the local hotels. I slowed down my pace (as I always do when i’m eager to see the bride) and saw the most beautiful bride appear at the doorway, she was bedecked from head to toe in stunning ivory tulle, her gown was a superb vision of loveliness - and obviously designer (I have an eye for these things). Her dress was literally breathtaking. My eyes wandered upwards to her head to check out her accessories and that’s when my heart literally sank to the pit of my stomach. Lets just say she hadn’t paid nearly as much attention (or spent as much brass) on her headwear as she had on her wedding gown. To be completely frank and I won't mince my words here but her tiara wouldn’t have looked out of place in my 3 year old’s dressing up box. It completely cheapened the whole “overall look”. You may think that sounds catty and you’d be right; if I knew this person I wouldn’t have said it to her face (obviously). If i’d have been a guest at her wedding I would not have been able to take my eyes off her tiara (but for all the wrong reasons).

Now i’m not saying brides shouldn’t buy cheap tiaras but attention to detail is the key. I made a massive mistake myself with my own tiara. I went “cheap” and definitely paid a price for that – when I opened the box the day before my wedding a huge piece had broken off and I had to superglue it (or rather my very nimble fingered husband-to-be did). I spent my entire wedding day catching a whiff of Loctite and worrying whether i'd still be wearing the damn thing on the plane to Mexico...

Not all cheap wedding accessories are tat though; you can find quality tiaras and hair accessories that can look very expensive in real life at very competitive prices. But how do you know what is tat and what isn’t? Here are some tips for you.

You nearly always get what you pay for.
A ten pound tiara from Ebay or the like that is described as “Swarovski crystal” will more than likely be Austrian Crystal or “diamante” or “Poor Man’s Swarovski” as I like to call it! It can sometimes be difficult to see the difference when you come across an image that has been photoshopped to look expensive.
Swarovski crystal is never ever “cheap”. Swarovski is expensive even to buy wholesale, so if you think it looks too cheap to be Swarovski then you are probably right.
If you are unsure of what you are purchasing contact the vendor and ask specifically what you are getting. Most genuine retailers will be more than happy to go into more detail of the materials used in their products.

What i’m trying to say is I find it baffling that brides seem to be very happy to spend thousands of pounds and man hours hunting down the wedding gown of their dreams but not applying a similar logic to their accessories. More and more brides are leaving it until two or less weeks before their wedding date to think about their wedding accessories and this may be part of the problem. Every week I get emails from brides-to-be enquiring about our delivery timescales as they are getting married in four days’ time. Scares the living daylights out of me it does.

So my advice is simply this: Apply the same care and logic with your accessories as you did when purchasing your dress. .... AND there’s absolutely nothing wrong with buying a cheap tiara – as long as it LOOKS expensive!

Our New Pearl Heirloom Collection

We are very proud to "show off" our new Pearl Heirloom Collection which we launched this week. This collection of swarovski pearl based pieces was designed and handcrafted by us and is entirely exclusive to the Kerry Blu collection - you can only buy it here! This collection is slightly more delicate than our usual designs but still in keeping with the vintage style that is still very much on trend. It features smaller sized pearls in elegant flower formations. There are no statement pieces, we've kept it simple but we love it and it seems our brides do too!

Hairpins can make a beautiful alternative to a traditional tiara or headband. They can be scattered about an up do or added to the side of a bun, you can choose one or two or go for half a dozen or so, the choice is yours. We have designed two styles of hairpin, a single bloom and a trio hairpin - made to order in ivory or white swarovski pearls.

We've kept the necklace and matching earrings simple. A beautiful pearl drop, timeless and elegant.

The bridal headband is a delicate formation of flowers set to the side of a hairband, perfect for brides wanting the security of a band rather than pins or grips.

The bracelet features an elegant vintage filigree clasp in sterling silver.

We have great pleasure to introduce to you Katie Bee, a very talented Blackpool Make Up Artist .We caught up with Katie recently and grilled her about her work and this is what she had to say.

What is your background, tell me what inspired you to become a make-up artist?

I have always had a love for make up but never thought about pursuing a career in it. Once I was married I missed all the hype and wanted something to take my mind off missing all the planning. I was a bridesmaid for my best friend and she had a make up artist for us all and I just thought I could do that and still be involved in weddings! I researched all different schools as I wanted to gain a qualification to prove I was a fully qualified make up artist. I then went on to do several weddings and loved every minute of it but I still wanted more. I was then given a massive opportunity to train at the North West Media Make up School in fashion, TV, Film and Theatre, it was the best thing I ever did as I love my job!

What products and brands do you use?

I try use a bit of everything as I think having a massive choice suits all clients. I mainly use MAC products as these look great to the eye and also on camera. However I also use Illumasqua, Chanel, Lancôme, Bobbi Brown, Laura Mercier, Clinque, Dior, YSL, NARS to name a few.

How far do you travel to make up a client?

I will travel all across the UK to clients, however after a 20 mile radius of FY3, I do charge an additional 40p per mile.

What sets you apart from other make up artists?

I would like to think with my extensive training and my own skills that I can create any look desired. I have a passion for make up and that definitely comes across in my personality. I like to have fun whilst I am working with always puts any client at ease and makes the experience as enjoyable and rewarding as it should be!

What other services do you offer besides make-up?

For my brides, I do offer fakebake spray tanning, I find this useful as a lot of brides these days like to look bronzed for their wedding. I find by offering this service I can match their make up perfectly with their tan.

What are your top tips for brides choosing a make up artist?

Definitely research where your make up artist has trained, I have heard horror stories of people claiming to be make up artists and they have had no formal training.

Ask to see work they have done – evidence of this would be pictures of them actually doing make up as again I have heard tales of websites with images just taken off the internet and the artist not being able to create the desired look.

Ask to read testimonials, as anyone could write a testimonial I always ask my brides if they would mind being contacted by any future clients. This shouldn’t be a problem if they were happy with the service provided.

If you could do any celebrity’s make-up who would it be and why?

I would have to say Lady GaGa, only as a creative point of view. She has such a unique style and to be able to really push the boundaries would be such fun and be great to showcase my skills.

Our Photoshoot

We recently got together with some local industry colleagues for our very first photoshoot. This is something we'd wanted to organise for a while but had never got round to pulling together. So, on a beautiful July evening we set off to Stanley Park in Blackpool witn our gorgeous model Lisa to take some images showcasing some of our most popular bridal headbands. The weather was absolutely perfect for the shoot and our photographer Kev Malone from Kev Malone Photography was able to capture some stunning imagery. Here you can see our Vintage Starlet Side Headband and Vintage Starlet Pendant and Matching earrings.

Our make-up artist was the very talented Katie Bee who created a Hollywood glamour look on our model with rich ruby lips and smokey eyes. This complemented the vintage style headbands that we chose for the shoot really well.

The dress was a beautiful full length strapless Trudy Lee design in ivory which was provided by Blush Bridal Boutique in Poulton le Fylde, Lancs.

I've been busy over the last few weeks designing new items for the website and expanding upon some of my current collections. I've added a new Celine Bridal Comb to the Celine collection

This is an alternative option to the Celine Headband.

I've also added a new headband to the Classic Crystal Range and a new Classic Crystal Hair comb

I really love my new Glamour Pendant with matching earrings. A diamante disco ball topped with a swarovski crystal faceted round on a sterling silver chain. Again, a very simple design but the ultimate chic in bridal jewellery!

I've been sourcing lots of new diamante designs for the website this week, contemporary style headbands and tiaras for the bride and sparkling diamante necklaces and earring sets.

This is my personal favourite although it's so much nicer in real life. A beautiful modern design that is simple but still has the wow factor.

I personally think less is more when it comes to wedding jewellery, that's why I really like this diamante set, it's traditional but a simple design that you can wear long after your wedding day.

New "Blossom" collection for 2009

Well as Christmas approaches it is time for me to be thinking about working on a new collection for 2009 so with that in mind I have put together the first two items of my "Blossom" collection. It consists of a beautiful handcrafted tiara made with an abundance of Swarovski crystal cream pearls and Swarovski crystal faceted rounds and a hairpin along the same theme. I am working on a matching necklace, bracelet and earrings.

Here are a couple of my latest designs for bridesmaids jewellery. The Summer Collection and Mia Collection.

The Summer is handcrafted using Swarovski crystal bicones and faceted rounds, crystal filigree balls and sterling silver stardust beads. All items are finished in sterling silver and can be made in an abundance of colours - the choice is yours!

The second is the Mia Collection - handcrafted using swarovski crystal bicones and swarovski crystal rondelles and finished in sterling silver. These make beautiful sets for bridesmaids and again can be made in any combination of colours that you require.

Here you can have a sneaky peak at my new items that i've either just uploaded to the website or that i'm in the process of creating. I'm loving the vintage stuff at the minute and i've just featured on the website two vintage 1950's diamante necklaces that i've turned into vintage tiaras. This one is my personal favourite - the vintage marquis diamante tiara. It's getting a lot of views at the minute so when it's gone it's gone! I'm also working on some vintage combs by incorporating some vintage diamante brooches onto combs so watch this space......

Check out my latest wedding jewellery set - the bracelet comprises of a beautiful swarovski crystal filigree flower set amidst two rows of 6mm swarovski crystal bicones with a fancy filigree clasp. I am in the process of making a matching choker which will be uploaded to the website shortly.
